History:

Jihwan was born in a coastal town where he spent the first ten years or so of his life growing up happily and normal-like. He was a huge fan of the ocean like the rest of the kids, and often he'd head out to go poke things with sticks in the tidal pools as boys do. One day he was doing this with some friends of his while searching for crabs and clams, when he noticed that something was watching him. It looked like a human, but its eyes were all wrong and their skin a sickly greyish-blue. Before he could tell anyone or call out the creature opened it's mouth and from it came the most entrancing, terrifying song Jihwan had ever heard. It drew him in and he found himself within the siren's clutches, steadily being dragged and guided out into deeper waters so it could drown and eat him.

The only thing that saved him was the fact that a fisherman happened to be returning after a poor catch and saw what was happening. The old man rushed in, speared the vile thing, and dragged Jihwan from the water in order to resuscitate him. His life was saved, but as a result he became poisoned with an illness the mariners of the town called "Siren Sickness": the curse of the siren's vile song had implanted a portion of its soul within him which called out to it and drew him towards bodies of water. And while the fact that it was a piece of the creature's own soul causing the sickness wasn't known, the fact remained that never again could Jihwan venture near the ocean--or in fact any great source of water. For if he allowed himself to dwell too long on the memories, the thought, even talk about what had happened, the water, or the siren itself, it would trigger a state within him known as Residual Heart and he would fall under the siren's thrall once again, entering a trance-like state that would drive him to the nearest source of water to submerge himself.

The doctors of the town patched Jihwan up as best they could, but beyond giving him medicine to help with his episodes and treat the symptoms there was nothing they could do. He became an outcast to his peers and even his best friends overnight: everyone knew what had happened, and no one wanted to go near him for fear of his illness spreading (even if it couldn't). He became "the siren boy" that everyone was afraid to go near.

So they moved. They left the coastal town and travelled to a city inland where there were no large bodies of water. They bought a house that wasn't near any lakes or rivers, and which even lacked anything resembling creeks. They settled in the suburbs near the city core, and Jihwan began his new life.

It didn't really get much better. Even without his reputation to bog him down he was still different. His episode with the siren had left his with a trauma related to the supernatural and the occult: he simply couldn't stomach them. Even Halloween was too much for his nerves. And then of course were his episodes, and by the time he was through middle school he was just as much :that weird kid" as he was back in his home town. So Kihwan withdrew. He didn't try to make friends and kept to himself, avoided unnecessary interaction with his classmates and focused on his schooling...ish. Look he's not a great student okay but he tries.

When he hit high school Jihwan was very much an aloof and grumpy loner who just wanted to avoid troublesome things. Which is of course why he hit a whole effing bunch of that when he slipped into Residual Heart while taking an alternate route home one day...and met a girl who would change his life forever: Anju.

She first encountered him halfway through tossing himself off a bridge into the river below. Panicking, she threw herself at him in an attempt to save his life...and instead of dragging him back, pushed them both over the edge into the water below. But. Instead of losing himself to the siren soul inside of him, Jihwan found himself alert and coherent despite the fact that he was entirely submerge in water for the first time ever since the attack. So he quickly dragged them both up to the surface and to the edge of the river (which was luckily not that far down from the bridge). There was an awkward moment of ARE YOU OKAY WHAT DO YOU MEAN AM I OKAY ARE YOU OKAY?? because they were both trying to make sense of what the heck had just happened, and eventually Jihwan bailed out when Anju kept trying to check up on him and offer him recommendations for self-help and all that.

He basically tries to forget that ever happened at all, when surprise surprise she shows up at his desk the next morning with COUNSELLING PAMPHLETS. He of course wants to know why the hell she's stalking him and Anju just stares and tells him they've been in the same grade for the last 2 years bro. I'm in the class across the hall. So he's basically never getting rid of her. She hovers around him and pesters Jihwan until it he basically has to yell at her and explain why it is that he looked like he was trying to drown himself. He tells her about the siren and what had happened, and Anju offers a simple and easy solution to his problem: HOLD HER HAND.

Because, she assured him, when people touch her weird stuff stops happening. And he of course doesn't believe this weirdo stalker girl and totally dismisses her, but then she drags him back to the same damn river and shows him she's telling the truth: he's actually at the water's edge and hasn't even remotely begun to lose himself. With Anju around he really won't be affected by Residual Heart and he realizes maybe this crazy girl is...well, still crazy, but at least telling the truth.

So they become the Supernatural Duo Buddy Squad (her idea, not his) and against his will he gets dragged on all her crazy self-invented duties to "fix all things paranormal and weird." And somewhere along the line he finds out that a whole gd organization actually exists in secret to stop her from doing that and look after it so she won't have to, and that someone really needs to Keep An Eye on this girl.

Unfortunately it turns out that person is him. Whacky punch-ghosts-in-the-face adventures ensue, Jihwan slowly starts to actually deal with some of his trauma and issues thanks to her, and then they date. Yaaaaaaay.

Personality:

Jihwan is rough around the edges for a lot of reasons, but the main one is that the moment he was attacked by a siren, all of his friends and classmates abandoned him and he became a social pariah overnight. No one would come near him, and anytime he approached the other kids they would yell at him to go away and call for the teacher out of fear of catching what he had. Even some of the adults would whisper about him behind his back, and as a result Jihwan's outgoing and sunny demeanour changed to become withdrawn and sullen. The event left him with trust issues, trouble opening up to people on an emotional level, and a general dislike for "people."

The amount of doctors he's gone to seen about his affliction has left him exasperated with the initial routine every time he goes to see a new one, but he's very good at delivering information clearly and concisely, and despite his issues with emotional intimacy he is actually quite adept at explaining and communicating his thoughts, feelings, and all of that to them because: it is Necessary. It's a methodical thing he detaches from emotionally in order to look after his health, because without full disclosure he could mess up a dosage or miss information that would help prevent an episode.

So while he's completely transparent with his doctors or psychiatrist or whoever he's seeing at any given time, he is very much Not So with anyone besides his parents because that's personal information and he doesn't like giving it out to just anyone. In fact he doesn't really like talking to anyone or trying to meet new people, because even when he transferred from his hometown to the city he was still singled out and labelled "weird." So he decided to put himself separate from everyone else and keep to his lonesome. It hurt less that way, and was much less trouble.

Because with his life already as complicated and grumpy as it is, Jihwan likes to avoid Trouble. He does punch the odd dude when shit comes up and a fight gets picked, but most of the time he'll choose to spend his time alone on the fringe of things, avoiding contact with other people even though that despite how unfriendly and owlish he can seem on the outside, Jihwan actually has a pretty soft interior and believes in doing the Right Thing which is why he looks after Anju and goes along with her insane paranormal adventures because someone needs to look after this girl.

Another reason he comes off like a growly angry bear is because he's awkward and just bad with people sometimes. He doesn't know how to handle the ones who are upfront and outgoing about their feelings because he most certainly isn't and it weirds him out. The guy likes to keep things to himself...except when surprised or caught off-guard. Then he LETS IT OUT, usually when embarrassed or angry. He yells. Okay. Life is hard when you have feelings and don't express them good like people do.

Abilities: NONE besides the usual punching dudes in the face because he too, is a dude. He does have a piece of a Siren's soul inside of him and that sometimes makes him try to drown himself :'|

[ Look he would do a video or audio post if it wasn't so incredibly freaky and weird to think about having all the people in the fleet plus the viewership looking at it. He's just Not That Kind of Dude and he likes his privacy!! So you all get this instead. ]

Alright is it just me or is this place messed up. Like seriously. Have any of you even noticed WE ARE IN SPACE. We should not be in goddamn space!! Have any of you even had astronaut training?? Where the hell are our space suits.

The only thing space-age about this shitty place is the food. And when I say that I mean that IT IS NOT EVEN REAL FOOD. How are you guys not freaking out?! They are watching us. That's creepy as shit!!
